Mrs. Barbara from Austin TX is requesting Classroom Basics through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need four hot beverage carafes as part of their business plan for their social skills guidance group.
My students are awesome! As a school counselor, I have the privilege and opportunity to work with all students in grades pre-kindergarten through 5th grade. My role is to address the social and emotional needs of our student population. In conjunction with a wonderful support team, I do this through individual counseling, guidance lessons, lunch groups, classroom assistance and so on and so forth.
Our school is a Title I school with a strong two-way dual language program.
The majority of our students speak Spanish as their primary language. Approximately 95% of our students receive free lunch and our community is facing the challenge of rising rent prices forcing high rates of transient students. Our students accept these challenges head on and come to school ready to learn.
Our school has many targeted goals for the year. One identified area is attendance and office referrals for our 5th grade students. These are two areas in which we see higher than desired numbers and know that attendance and school suspensions have direct connections to future graduation rates.
Named by our students, the Crazy Cool Coffee Cart is a group created to provide our students with the opportunity to work cooperatively to serve others around our school.
The students are responsible for collecting coffee, tea, and hot chocolate orders from the staff and then delivering these requests on Friday mornings. The goals of this group are: (1) provide these students with a positive interaction at school, (2) encourage cooperation between students, (3) teach students to think beyond themselves to serve others, and (4) promote long-term mindsets and goal setting.
Our hope is that by helping students see how vital they are to the school, they will be more likely to attend class consistently and treat those in their community (peers, teachers, staff) with respect. Both of these results are important skills for successful transitions into middle and high school. The requested four coffee carafes are essential for helping this group serve the school and learn important customer service skills.
