This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I am currently a 3rd grade teacher at an elementary school in Chicago's Englewood neighborhood. Although my students try their hardest and come to school ready to learn each day, many of them are still reading below grade level. In order to help our students catch up with their peers, Independent Reading is a daily part of our reading instruction. However, the books in my 3rd grade classroom are not low enough to reach those students who are reading on a 1st or 2nd grade level.
One series I have discovered that meets the needs of those struggling students and also entices them to read more is the Clifford series. However, I do not have enough Clifford books to go around and the ones I do have, have seen better days. It is hard to actively engage students in independent reading time when they have to fight each other just to have a book they can can actually read.
I am asking for 30 different Clifford books to help sustain my students during Independent Reading. Students become proficient readers by reading a lot of books on their ability level. Once they master texts on that level, they gradually move on to more challenging books. The books in the Clifford series are perfect for helping my students become successful readers because they are imaginative and endearing, just like my students. My girls love dreaming about having a big, red dog for a best friend just like Emily Elizabeth does, and my boys like thinking of the trouble they could get in to with an enormous pet at their side. Even the roughest and toughest of my students turn in to softies when reading a Clifford book!
By providing a plethora of Clifford books for my students to read you will ensure that my students will grow as readers and will be able to enjoy even more books in our classroom library.
