I am a teacher of 20 awesome students. Each child comes to our class with a different story to tell.
I teach in an urban school where all of my students receive free breakfast/lunch.
They often come to school without basics: coats, gloves, backpacks, clean clothes, hygiene, etc. I often spend the 20 minutes in the morning just getting my kids ready for the day with their basic needs, so that they can focus on school and not worry about hygiene, clothing, etc. They did not come to school with supplies. I provided all of that for them.
Despite all of the struggles my students face at home, when they come to school they're happy and motivated. I often have all of my students present daily because our classroom is their escape. When they come to school, they know they are safe and someone cares about them. Our classroom is set up in a way where they have leadership roles, partner work, and independent work are done daily, and we are constantly working on our character traits of kindness and empathy.
We spend time every day using colors to bring our work to life. Twistable crayons have the durability to last all school year. This way, we are not spending lots of money on crayons because we have the right crayons right from the beginning.
The scented markers are great incentives that kids love when they do a great job on their work and the twistable are the crayons that have the durability to last all year!
By having supplies that motivate and engages, students spend more time focused and learning.
Supplies are essential in a classroom but having the right classroom materials makes all the difference.
