My school is in an urban, high poverty area, and 100% of our students qualify for free lunch. My students have grown up in the inner city. Many of my students deal with poverty and crime on a daily basis, which might seem unimaginable to some of us. Although my students deal with trauma on a daily basis, they still come to school with a smile on their face, eager to learn and grow.
Each year I am more and more amazed at how my little ones are able to leave all of their troubles at home and come to school ready to learn.
I have seen so many children in my class grow so much in just ten short months. I know how hard my students have to work and they truly inspire me to be the best teacher I can be.
Most of my students will come to school with just themselves on the first day. I want to be sure that all of my students are greeted with a fresh pack of crayons, never used scissors and a brand new glue stick. I know that school shopping with my mom was something that I looked forward to each year. If this project is funded, my students will be able to "shop" in our classroom and have a WONDERFUL start to the year.
These essentials may seem small to some, but until the very last day of school my students will hold these items tight and treat them with care.
I know if this project is funded it would not just mean the world to me, but more importantly to those sweet, innocent and wonderful Kindergarten students.
