Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach students that have a moderate to severe autism spectrum disorder. Students in our program range in age from 4 to 6 years. We have 12 students enrolled in our class currently. My students benefit from strong routines and a structured based program. All areas of instruction need to be very clearly defined with visual supports posted and modifications made to instructional materials as well as the classroom environment to ensure the success of each child. Most students in our program require an individual picture schedule that clearly indicates each transition that will occur throughout the day. Our program is on a typical public school campus giving us opportunities to mainstream the kids with neurotypical children daily.
Our goal is to provide intensive early intervention so that our students are able to interact and learn in a general education setting when provided modifications and supports.
Students work in small group rotations with two students and one adult to address behavioral, social, academic, communication, life skill and sensory needs throughout the day.
My Project
Our students have varying levels of dexterity and attentional capacity. These crayons will give them more access to art projects and an ability to express themselves.
The unique shapes of these crayons allow for our students to have a prolonged grasp and participate for longer durations.
We are also in need of a drying rack for all of our wonderful work. In our class, we love art because we all contribute and create together. We do seasonal art for each holiday as well as work in an art rotation daily. The daily arts practice is building our fine motor and pre-academic skills that the students really need.
