Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a special education teacher in a public high school on the Southeast Side of Chicago. Along with my many of my students, I grew up in the area and feel a strong sense of community that helps bond me with my students and peers. Majority of the students in the school come from low income households so their access to resources are limited; majority also attended the surrounding neighborhood elementary schools where resources are funding were also limited. Unfortunately, when resources and funding are limited schoolwide, special education classrooms suffer more than their general education counterparts. My students hold a variety of strengths and they display their strengths in multiple different ways. I want to ensure that my students have enough resources when they come into my classroom so they can use their strengths in a way that fits their learning style.
My Project
These materials will make a difference in my students' learning because my students frequently use art and color as a way to express themselves and their answers/responses. Special education classrooms are home to multiple different strengths and abilities so it is important to build on those strengths to better assist our students.
Art and colors are strengths in my classroom, so I can incorporate both into my instruction by giving my students different opportunities opportunity to use crayons, colored pencils and markers.
For example, I teach Mathematics so we work with a lot of equations, formulas and symbols; the students will create multiple anchor charts throughout the school year to assist with their visual learning. Using different colors also makes it easier for students to organize different information
