My students walk in ready to deliver and take on the tasks of the class. When they are all here, I can confidently say, "All of my favorite students are here today," as they boast about who, if any, is the actual favorite.
I teach at a K-12 school where students readily accept one another as they are.
Their camaraderie impresses me daily and allows us to dive deep into authentic learning experiences. My students' exposure to opportunities is limited in our distant, rural setting. As a result, the students love novel, new information, and are filled with curiosity.
My Project
Our school shop serves grades 6-12 and helps students pursue their interests when building industrial skills.
One project that has spiked the interest of many of our students with artistic tendencies is wood carving.
Many students have seen the woodcarving set we recently received through DonorsChoose. The interest is high enough so I would like to run a whole class unit.
There are also students, both young and old, who have reservations using the powered miter saw. The brand of hand saws came recommended by our tool sharpener as their blades are replaceable and their performance is sharp. An inventory of these hand saws will help instruct the alternative to using the miter hand saw and provide an important confidence-boosting stepping stone for my students.
Students use these tools to build projects of their own creative and artistic design. We turn over wall shelves, cutting boards, picture frames, fishing pole racks, and all other types of projects. We encourage students to pursue their interests and focus on process over product.
