Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am an 8th grade middle school Science teacher. I teach in a low income, high needs area. I teach the entire grade and reach 170 kids; consisting of ESL, Special Ed, Gen Ed, and Honors. We are a Title I school and our students strive to be the best but lack resources that they need to succeed.

My students work hard and often support their mothers and fathers by running household errands and watching younger siblings.

Unfortunately, another thing that my students have in common is that their families are struggling financially. Within my school the majority of the students qualify for the state's free or reduced meal program. Some students even reside in shelters. With that said there is little or no money to purchase technology items for at-home use. That means any exposure to technology falls on the school's shoulders. Due to the budget cuts schools have endured, teachers in my school are no longer able to personally give each student the resources they desire and need to succeed in this technology driven era.

My Project

My students enjoy doing experiments and learning visually. As shown over and over students learn better when they take part in the educational process. They can only do that if they are provided with the basics. My students eyes light up when they know that there will be technology in use. The addition of a class set of Samsung Chromebook laptops would be a great new resource for my students. Under the Common Core standards rolling out nationwide students & teachers are required to use technology in the classroom. However, classrooms are not provided with the necessary tools to accomplish that task. These selected laptops are small and compact and easy to use. Students would be able to "check out" laptops for projects, presentations, and reports. By providing my students with these tools, you will be a valuable asset to my students' lifetime of learning. Since the technology is not available in their homes you will be providing a means for them to compete with more fortunate kids.

Your donation to this project will help to close both the Technology Gap and the Achievement Gap that exists between students with and without privilege.

You can help to shift our school, state, and nation's statistics toward higher achievement for less fortunate children. More importantly, you can bring opportunity, excitement, and self-confidence to my students.
