Every student deserves an education that will challenge him or her to make dramatic academic gains. However, I have recently noticed that my advanced learners are not receiving the resources they need to keep moving forward.
I am blessed to teach three classes of amazingly diverse learners.
I've spent a lot of time making sure that my struggling learners have access to resources that will help them get caught up. My students performing on grade level are continuing to make great gains as well. I also have a group of advanced learners who are not being equally served. These are students who are reading and writing above grade-level and are anxious to be challenged. If their talents are not fostered, these students are at-risk of loosing their edge. I refuse to rob these students of a fruitful future by not providing the resources that will allow them to leverage their education towards greatness!
My Project
While I can provide activities and academic goals that will continue to push these advanced students, I do not have the texts that will nurture their rapid growth. I want to get these students invested in books that will engage them and challenge them to continue to grow as readers, so I surveyed friends and educators to try to determine the classic texts that got them invested in reading. Through this research, I was able to compile a list of engaging yet challenging books that will help my advanced readers continue to move forward. The books were also selected to give these students a head start on our school's successful AP program. Getting my students invested in books like To Kill A Mockingbird, Catcher in the Rye, and The Great Gatsby will help to solidify their accelerated pace and provide the foundations for college success!
Attending a high-needs school should not mean that students should have to compromise their gifts or forgo their right to the resources that will help them grow.
Every student in my class deserves these things. Please help me ensure that I can provide these opportunities to all of my students.
