I work in a fully inclusive urban school where the majority of students are living in poverty. The students in my school are excited to come to school and learn everyday. My goal is to create an environment that is safe and comfortable for student learning.
My students have a variety of disabilities but they still learn alongside their nondisabled peers.
My students are just like any other students except that they have to overcome additional obstacles in order to learn alongside their peers. Therefore they need additional support, materials, and other modifications in order to access the same learning as their peers.
Most of my students are on sensory diets which help them regulate their sensory input. This means there are times of the day set aside for students to engage in sensory activities to help them control their senses.
My students need a crash mat for the sensory room so that they are able to jump and crash into it.
This will help them regulate their proprioceptive senses and make sure that they are ready for learning. By regulating the proprioceptive students will begin to develop the body awareness which is necessary for them to sit and focus on instruction.
I know once my students receive this mat and begin using it, we will see them make academic progress. So thank you for all that you will do and all that it will continue to do for my students.
