Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Many of my students come to class after riding a bus for over 1-2 hours so they are tired. They also have multiple disabilities and many are non-verbal. Our classes serve students with a range of disabilities, including intellectual disabilities, emotional disturbance, autism spectrum disorder and specific learning disabilities. My students range in age from 18-22 years old. About 1/2 of the students live in group homes. So school is a secure and special place for them. We are a program that works on life skills and help them to learn how to fit into the world that can seem very daunting to them.
The typical student in my class reads at a pre-k level and many struggle with basic phonics and number sense.
90% of our students are African American or Latino. The opportunity and achievement gaps are apparent among our student population. Our department budget is not disclosed to us and very limited to what we can get. I tend to purchase most items needed for my students with my own money.
Our classrooms are dilapidated, textbooks are outdated and technology is virtually nonexistent. Special education teachers are expected to deliver excellent instruction and be creative.
My Project
The materials and supplies that I am requesting for my students will be put to good use. I know exactly where everything will go. My students will be so excited to have paper, clay, and a strong pencil sharpener to help them express their creative and imaginative minds.
The supplies at our school are very limited and my students tend to come from very impoverished homes so colored construction paper gets them very excited.
They know that will help them with class art projects and also help them to express their own ideas. The large colored butcher paper will be great to help decorate the classroom and make it interesting to the students.
I can't wait to get the molding clay as this will help the students work on their hand strength and muscle control. Many of my students lack total hand control and struggle to even hold a pencil correctly. The molding clay will be a great tool to help them work on their strength along with creating unique projects!! Finally the heavy duty multi-sized pencil sharpener is very needed. We go through many pencils and we are in dire need of a sharpener that can withstand heavy use.
