Help me give my students a chance to make tangible craft pieces such as pour paint art, nail art, friendship bracelets, and more, all while building social real-world connections.
I have a wonderfully diverse group of middle schoolers. They are hard-working and love a new challenge. Our school is a public school with a broad range of household incomes. While some of our students come from homes with ample means, there is a large section of our families who are at or below the poverty level.
One of my goals is to create experiences that are new, exciting, challenging, and tap into interests my students didn't even know they had.
We use worldly examples and bring experiences to the classroom as much as possible. As we move out of COVID restrictions, our building is trying to foster as many hands-on experiences as possible.
Many of my students come from other countries and are immersing themselves in a new culture while they learn a new language. As a dedicated middle school teacher, I see one of my jobs as exposing students to new experiences. Our students rise to the challenge each time and working together fosters a sense of camaraderie and gets them talking.
My Project
My students will get hands-on opportunities to create artwork and gift items. The goal is for them to spark creativity and expand their experiences. I am specifically excited to create the nail art project where they will learn to use a hammer to nail designs into wood, then add colorful strings to make beautiful artwork. This will give them a chance to use tools and increase their fine motor skills. Not only with crafting increase confidence but working alongside their peers will also create a fun social environment where they can build lasting friendships.
Students are craving a connection with peers, adults, and the school community as a whole.
Creating crafts together will build friendships, foster a sense of accomplishment, and get the students talking. Creating pour painting artwork will let them create amazing pieces to take home and enjoy for a long time. I am hoping to create a mess-making, fun atmosphere that students will remember for years to come.
