I work at PS 32 in the Carroll Gardens neighborhood in Brooklyn. My school is a Title I school surrounded by relative affluence; though the children I teach come from the "neighborhood," very few come from anywhere other that the Gowanus Housing Projects. Theirs is a question of access; on walking trips in the neighborhood, outside of the projects, their curiosity is insatiable, something remarkable to behold. Recently the fixation among my students has been pottery; among all the stores in the neighborhood, this is the one that has sparked the most interest. I am asking for a small electric kiln to fire pottery, as well as enough clay to supply a classroom of students from kindergarten to second grade until at least Christmas. Christmas is the short term goal; if we have enough materials, I would be able to partner with another teacher to supply this experience to a much wider audience. My school has a high need, an academic need that is now being addressed, after years of work from staff, students, and administration. This pottery experience, if funded, would take several steps towards filling a need that is rarely addressed; the need of art, and the art of creating, within the classroom.
