A new bunch of children will be entering my room in August and I already know a few of them. But I know them: some have both parents, some have single parent families, some live with grandma and grandpa, some are wards of the state, some have moms and dads that work hard, some are the primary moneymaker, some just want to pay for the things they want, some want to pay for the things they or a sibling might need, they work long hard hours, they have homework to do, survival may be more important than graduating high school, some dream of college, some dream of joining the service, some do not dream.
Our school is a rural Appalachian high school where the majority of the children are economically disadvantaged; in my actual classroom, 70% of my children are economically disadvantaged.
My philosophy of education is simple: every child has potential, every child has some intrinsic ability. I, as a math teacher, must find a way to engage that child, trigger a fire deep inside that will burn a lifetime. Will you join me?
My Project
Collaboration between teachers of different subject matters enhances both subject matters. My plan for my Algebra 2 classes is to utilize the TI Nspire calculators, pH probes for those calculators and cradles to utilize the probes with the calculators in collaboration with Chemistry. We should have 40 children in the classroom together, with 5 cradles and 5 pH probes. Ideally, 4 children per unit would be best.
The children need to see up close how the pH differs with different chemicals, different reactions and other experiments that involve both chemistry and Algebra 2.
I am searching for a soap maker to teach us the use of pH in making soap. Real life applications matter!!! Five more cradles would make this magic work! Three down and two more to go!!
