I teach anywhere from 20 to 25 fifth grade students that are from a small rural town in Illinois, most of which come from low-income families. Many cannot afford supplies or lunches for school and often have a rough home life. However, that doesn't stop them from being creative and hardworking students.
I love that my students show me that nothing is impossible if you believe in yourself.
In fifth grade, the concepts the students are learning and the readings continue to get harder and harder in preparation for middle school. However, my students don't back down to a challenge and we work together to overcome any difficulty.
Not all students love to read. Additionally, not all students have a quiet, comfy space to read at home where they can fill their minds with the stories they are reading. One way to help with this is by incorporating space in my classroom where students want to read and can be comfortable while they are reading.
A reading space with a classroom rug creates a place like home for students.
Making students feel at ease at school can help in all aspects of their learning. Overall, I hope that this simple rug addition to my classroom can help motivate more students to love a life of reading.
