My students need cozy places to read! Student benches, flexible seating chairs, and pillows will give my students more options when picking spots around the room to cuddle up with a good book!
Who doesn't love to curl up with a good book in a nice cozy place? That is the largest part of our literacy instruction in our first grade classroom. Yes, we learn all the skills (phonics, high frequency words, comprehension strategies, responding to text). However, getting comfortable for quiet reading or finding a nook to read with a friend is highlight of the day. What is viewed by the children as an escape into new worlds, is actually critical learning time. Learning to read is best done by reading!
Our school is largely immigrant children who are developing literacy skills in a new language.
They may or may not have consistent support at home. Too often families are self conscious about their mastery of English to successfully help their children. Habits that are created and nurtured in the classroom are readily developed at home.
The students all have varying levels of reading ability. Our Reading Workshop time is followed by their independent reading, partner reading and my small group instruction.
My Project
A cozy reading nook will make our classroom more inviting and get students excited about independent reading time. The two benches will be paired together to create a fabulous reading corner. The pillows will not only be used to brighten up our room and make it feel homey, they will also be used anywhere in the room for students to prop themselves on and make comfortable reading spots. Lastly, the flexible seating chairs will give my students more options when selecting places to read around the room. Together, these materials will make our room cozier and help students be more engaged during reading time.
