Help me give my students the ideal reading center to listen to their stories with their own earbuds while on the beanbags and then create vocabulary cards to practice!
My sixth graders go to a Title I school and come from diverse homes.
I have students that live with both parents, single parents and students that live with their grandparents.
But the vast majority of my students are from low socio-economic housing and cannot afford their school supplies.
It is incredibly sad when children are deprived of opportunities. My students are in the eighty-five percent range for free or reduced price lunch, and we try to provide as many materials as we can for our children. My students are challenged at school because they do not get a lot of home support, so it is my job to make sure they have what they need to make learning a priority for them.
What makes this year more difficult than others is that the Oklahoma Education budget is at the lowest ever, and the materials for our students will not be available this year.
My Project
This corner is to entice my students to do more independent reading and then conquer new vocabulary. My students do not have much opportunity to learn or practice at home and I want them to have positive experiences in my classroom.
Sitting on the bean bags with their own earbuds to listen to a story will make them eager to read!
After the story is over we will use the index cards and colored pencils to do our vocabulary activities. Then each student can keep their cards organized in their own holder so they can practice at home or school with their peers.
