My Project

South Glens Falls is a small, close-knit community. Our middle school consists of grades 6-8 and possesses an eclectic group of young adolescents. I have a total of 125 7th-grade students throughout the day. Many of my students come from lower-middle-class families and are reluctant readers. Often, students have concerns at home that affect their behavior and performance in school. Also, access to books outside of school - especially during the summer months - is almost non-existent. Therefore, my classroom is a place that fosters an enjoyment of reading while creating a safe environment where students can be themselves. How educators construct the physical and intellectual spaces in their classrooms is key to improving student engagement. As the 7th grade ELA teacher who supports 125 students, I strive to make learning as engaging and comfortable as possible for my students. My goal for this project is to spark the joy of reading and collaboration for them.
