Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember your childhood school library? Mine was large, welcoming, and a comfortable, quiet place to read and learn. I want to establish that for my K-8 students, and I now have the chance to create that inviting environment my students deserve.
My students are good kids.
Many have challenging home lives and struggle in school, but the majority still have a passion for reading which excites me as a school librarian. They are eager to come to the library and exchange books, see what their friends are reading, and check out what new books the library has to offer. I bring in new materials as often as I can (when funding is available), and seeing their faces when I say I have new books is constantly rewarding.
My Project
This reading rug for our library will brighten up the space and provide students a cozy place to spread out and enjoy their stories. It will give me the opportunity to read to my younger students together as a group. They would be able to get closer to the story and experience the book in a way they just can't right now as they're spread out at tables around the room. Too many students can't see the amazing pictures and illustrations, no matter how hard I try to circulate! But this reading rug will provide a clean, colorful area for them to all gather and enjoy a possibly life-changing story.
For my older students, I know that this new reading carpet will give them a chance to relax, spread out, and enjoy their books as they are meant to be enjoyed. I want them to have a quiet, comfortable space to read and this carpet will give them that.
Recently, our administrators decided to expand the library!
We are breaking down a wall and combining two small classrooms to make one library. Now I will have the opportunity to create a warm, welcoming reading environment for all of my students instead of having almost 40 people crammed into one small space. It will give them the opportunity to have a comfortable reading experience, which I so desperately want to provide for them.
