Ms. Marsie-Hazen from Washington DC is requesting reading nooks, desks & storage through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need a comfortable space to self sooth when they need some time to process his or her feelings. They also need a comfortable space to sit while reading.

I have a class full of inquisitive, funny, and kind 5 year olds. They love to sing, play, learn new things and ask questions that catch me off guard.
Their laughter and smiles could make the toughest person in the world melt!
I work in a title one school which means that most of the students in the school receive free lunch. In addition to being a title one school, it is considered to be in the bottom 40 schools in DC Public Schools. The demographic of my classroom is African American and/or Latino.
Comfortable seating options in our Calming Down Corner and our Library will offer students a safe place to go to practice self soothing procedures as well as get comfortable with reading independently.
Social Emotional Learning is key for encouraging students to not only be able to process information, but to be able to process his or her emotions in a healthy manner.
It is important to me that all students gain the tools they need to be successful in school but also as adults later in life.
I'm also requesting seating options for our library/ independent reading center. Often times reading is used as a punishment for kids which results in a discomfort or a dislike of reading. I would like to create a space where students feel happy to go to read, with the hope that I can foster a love of reading in my students.
