I am a new teacher beginning my career within the Chicago Public School System. This year, I am excited to say that I will be teaching a Kindergarten Class in the Chicago's South Side Englewood Community (98.8% Low- Income). I have spent many hours preparing the room for this upcoming school year. I am using my given resources to the best of my abilities but would love to provide my students (approximately 25) with a spacious area where they can sit back, get comfortable and gain an enjoyment for books and reading. After all, through books we can make our dreams and imagination come to life, let alone start a great foundation for the rest of our education. I would love to have a reading center that is cozy (a rug surrounded with some large pillows) and a variety of books for all interests. The teacher after whom I have inherited the classroom left numerous books for the students. Now, I am trying to build on that and make the reading area more inviting. This would also be an area where the students would gather for read alouds and morning message. The purchase of the rug and pillows will not only make the reading corner an area that is welcoming to readers but also a center meeting point for building our classroom community.
