My students need a cozy carpet to sit on during many different activities such as story time, reading and math groups, partner work, and classroom meeting time.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My students are constantly working all over the classroom completing various activities. Unfortunately, we do not currently have a space where we can all sit together as a class on the carpet. We love to read stories together and have classroom meetings, but we all want to be cozy and together!
My students are five and six years old.
Most of them come from low income homes, and do not often have the resource they need to succeed. When my students come to school they are so eager and excited to learn! I want to make sure that while my students are in school they feel safe, cared for, and loved. They all have so much potential and just need a little extra push to get there. All of the staff at our school is positive and encouraging to our students. We all want to see them succeed!
My students will use the carpet for many different activities. Every morning we start off with morning meeting, where we review the calendar, our letters and sight words, numbers, shapes and colors, and get our day started off right. We will also gather to read stories together on the carpet. Students can also work with a partner on the carpet during reading groups and math groups. This year we are implementing a new program called Community Cares which will give us a chance to sit in a circle and talk about important social skills and how to be a problem solver. This program is based on building a classroom community where students feel safe and respected. One way to do that is to have students sit in a circle during this time, so everyone is included. Having a carpet that we all fit on will help us to have a greater sense of togetherness.
Receiving this carpet to use in our classroom will improve our classroom environment.
When we are all able to sit together in a group and have conversations with each other, it will create the sense that everyone belongs and is important. When we can all sit in a circle together, my students will be able to talk to one another while looking at the other person's face, instead of the back of their head. We will be able to keep a positive, safe, caring environment in our classroom.
