Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Children need a special place to go to, to explore the magic of reading! They need to find books that they relate to, and find interesting. This is so important for children to learn to love to read. I teach 2nd grade in an area where the students cannot afford their own basic materials for school, let alone any books.
My students have hard lives. They come from either broken homes, where dad is in jail or mom is off doing drugs, or from families where each parent has two to three jobs each. They have no parental support or no escape from the trials they are faced with daily. They love to read but they lose that interest when they go home to a house where there aren't any books or any piece and quiet.
My students had this great plastic cabin that I called, "The Cabin of Wonders". I always told them that dreams can come true in there, and that there are so many places to explore while they read in there. They loved it! It was filled with fun pillows that I bought myself.
I let each student take turns reading inside this cabin when they earned it. But, the state fire marshall came and inspected our school a month ago and told me that the cabin has to be removed and so do the pillows because they are fire hazards. He said that I could get approved bean bags for my class instead. I told my students and they were devastated. It made me so sad.
My students need that fun place to go to when they are reading. They need a little reading retreat area, a place that they aren't blessed enough to have at home. I want to provide a more extensive library book selection for them as well. With these two new fire approved bean bags and fun and exciting books, I know my students will continue their love and excitement for reading!
I am a young teacher that has only been out of college for two years. I still have student loans, and the funding that is provided is very minimal. I have to use most of it on materials that my students can't provide themselves, like pencil boxes, erasers, paper, folders, back packs, and much more. By donating to my students, you are providing them with a reading getaway that they need and will never get otherwise. Thank you!
