My students need an ability to choose their working environment. Through bean bag chairs, tables, and lamps a safe space is created that allows them freedom to express themselves and their ideas without limitation or restrictions.
Nelson Mandela said that "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world." My students know that every day they walk into my room they are preparing themselves for their future and through themselves the future of our world. I am always encouraging my students to inquire about the world around them and engage in new experiences and new ways of learning and they take these challenges head on!
My students embrace themselves, their peers, and the world around them through the relationships we build in the classroom.
As a class and as a school we are preparing for a brighter future and I want to provide everything I can for my students. By providing for them I provide for the future.
My Project
Creating a safe space in my classroom allows students to take charge of their learning and make the choices that work best for them. During independent work times, students can choose a location in the classroom that works for them. Currently, my students are choosing to work in a variety of locations in our room such as: at different tables, sitting under tables with clipboards, or sitting or laying on the floor. These are not the most comfortable places for my students and it can hinder their learning, despite the freedom they are given. I want to make sure students are comfortable because it is a foundational component in motivating them. I have noticed them make better inquiries, create better work, and ask more in-depth questions when they are given a choice in their seating. They demonstrate an independence and responsibility because they almost always make good choices about where they sit. They are more engaged and get more work completed than when they are restricted to their desk.
The products that I have selected will help my students by giving them additional seating options to make more effective learning choices.
The beanbag chairs will allow for additional comfortable floor seating options. They are lightweight and can be easily used in many areas of the classroom. The students will have a rug that will help give them some comfort and space between themselves and the cold and hard floor. They will have a table to write on rather than clipboards. The bookshelves will allow for better storage for classroom books and reading materials that students can easily access. The lamp will allow for better lighting for students who choose to sit in this area. This space will give students to chance to be independent and successful.
