Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I'm a first grade teacher at a public school in Hartford, CT. I have been teaching for 19 years. This year I have 16 hardworking and motivated students in my class. My students come from a variety of backgrounds. Students in my class speak both Spanish and English.

My students love to listen to stories on the carpet.

My students are enthusiastic about learning new things. We love to read fiction and non-fiction stories together. We have spent numerous hours sitting on carpet and at this point our carpet is worn and torn. I would really like a new carpet where students can have their own space to sit comfortably while learning and listening to our morning message.

My Project

Every morning we start our day on the carpet with our morning message where we discuss the day's events. The students thoroughly enjoy this time on the carpet. They share stories about their weekends and have discussions with peers. Students learn new vocabulary, spelling words and daily oral language editing activities during our morning meeting.

Every afternoon we join together on the carpet again to enjoy a story and learn new phonics.

Students love story time, in addition to listening to the story it gives them an opportunity to have discussions with their peers about stories. Students would benefit from having their own personal space on this new carpet during story time and phonics' work.
