Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work at a Title One school. The majority of my students receive free or reduced price lunch and come from homes where English is their second language. A large percentage of the population are "at-risk" and have focusing issues. Many of them come to school with little life experiences, such as going to the show or watching a play at the theater. Even though they have daily obstacles to overcome, they come to school eager to learn. Once they enter my classroom, I want them to be assured that they are in a safe, learning environment and that anything is possible!
My Project
"Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body" ~Sir Richard Steele.
This project will help me create a cozy corner by bringing my students a comfortable reading chair and a set of magnetic book shelves.
The chair will be placed in the corner of our classroom. It has big arms so the students can lean into it and get comfortable. Next to the chair, I will use the magnetic display shelves to place on the whiteboard. These shelves will showcase our "Books of the Week". These books are switched out depending on the current topics we are studying or the holidays we celebrate that month. The shelves allow me to bring attention to books that students might otherwise overlook and never read. The plastic baskets will contain additional books to switch out as the "showcased" books are selected and being read. I can't wait to put new books into my students' hands!
