Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are amazing! They are a diverse group who come to school each day wanting to experience new things and grow. My students quickly learn that we can make excuses or we can make it happen. What makes my students so thoroughly fabulous is how consistently they choose to make it happen despite the obvious challenges they may face.
My school is a Title I school in Kissimmee, Florida with a wide range of diversity and high poverty.
Still, these students always impress visitors, and their very own teacher, with their tenacity and desire to grow and learn more no matter their educational background. There will always be issues in Title I schools and we will always work to overcome the obstacles. DonorsChoose.org is a great way for us to receive the help we need in order to make learning fun for our students.
My Project
There are few things greater in this world than escaping into a good book, however for many students some help is necessary to find them the book that opens up the universe of possibilities books provide. Comics and graphic novels are a great way to get those students who aren't interested in reading motivated to try. Comics are also great tools for teachers to utilize to introduce skills like inferencing, predicting, and sequence, as well as a great way for students to practice those skills on their own.
The cozy comic corner will help students have a comfy place to go where they can grab a comic book that interests them and just let themselves get immersed in another world, where kids can be super heroes and save the world.
Comics come in so many genres today and can therefore expose students to more chapter books they can read later as they gain more interest. This corner will be refreshed with new comics so students are always looking forward to incoming new titles. Please help me find a fun way to pass on a love of reading to my students.
