Cozy Comfort to Increase Conversation
My students need a rug and chairs where they can work comfortably alone or with a classmate.
As Benjamin Franklin said, "Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn." My students learn best when they have the opportunity to work and discuss learning together.
We are a Title I school.
Many are second language learners. It is imperative for them to have discussions while learning to increase their understanding of material, books, and math strategies. Through talk they will increase their vocabulary and build cooperative strategies which will help them for a lifetime.
I envision my students sitting in the chairs reading or writing stories. I picture them lying on the floor with their clipboards next to a friend discussing how their stories could be better, what math strategy would work best, and how the character in the story changed by the end of the book.
My students are incredible people.
My job is to help them learn as much as they can. I believe that this environment is what will make that possible. They need a place where they can be comfortable to work and free to talk as they need.
