My students have overcome more challenges in their early years than most people will in a lifetime. In addition to having disabilities, many of my students come from families of immigrants or refugees and most of them live in extreme poverty. There are 11 different languages spoken in our district and 93.8% of our students receive free or reduced lunches. Almost 1/4 of the students in the school qualify for special education.
Despite the numbers, my students are so much more than statistics.
They have big dreams, strong opinions, and hearts to change the world. They just need a little bit more assistance than most to reach their goals.
My Project
When I work, I want to be comfortable in the room I am in. The indirect lighting will make the classroom feel more cozy and welcoming. The new furniture will give students different options to work besides a hard chair or uncomfortable desk. The L-shaped desks and swivel chairs would be for a more formal way to sit and communicate with the teachers.
The dining room set would be used for small group activities.
I would like some book shelves so I can provide more reading opportunities for the students. The brick backdrop and fake fireplace are to make the reading section of my classroom more cozy and inviting for students to sit and read. Many of my students have attention problems so having the ability to move and change seating will help decrease some of the behavior issues that could arise. They will be able to work at the dining set together as the work on math and reading skills.
Students spend so much time in the classroom that it is a necessity for them to be comfortable in the environment. The students need flexible seating, different ways to collaborate, and a cozy spot to work individually. My students will learn that a classroom doesn't have to be a boring, uncomfortable, inflexible four walled room.
