The students in my class come from a very diverse background. All of the students qualify for Special Education are in a self-contained class for 5/6 of their school day. This is the first year an IAC classroom has been part of this middle school, and these students now have the opportunity to attend a middle school in their neighborhood that offers the services they need.
Not only do these students have special learning needs, but 30% of the class are English Language Learners.
These students are overcoming great obstacles to be successful in the classroom and outside. All of the students in this class also qualify for free and reduced lunch.
My Project
Imagine having sensory needs and being in a classroom with florescent lights all day. This is an everyday thing for many of my students. For students with sensory needs and learning disabilities, these florescent lights can negatively impact their school performance, behaviors, and mood.
Florescent light shades will benefit students with sensory needs by providing them with an environment that helps them regulate moods and behaviors.
My students require portions of their day to be spent on monitoring their behaviors, moods, and emotions. They need assistance in social skills areas where they learn to act appropriately. These shades will help them to be more calm and respond in a positive way to material.
Students that struggle with headaches, ADHD, Autism, and other academics can be in a calming atmosphere that will allow them to work through their difficulties. With dimmer light, students may have less headaches and feel more relaxed. I think that these shades will have a positive impact on my students and their growth in academics.
