Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Reading is a huge struggle for my students. Most come from foreign countries and all have learning disabilities in reading. Most hate to read and dread doing so. They have never had a good reading experience before and equate reading to torture.
There are 43 different languages spoken in the public middle school I teach in.
Over 60% of our students are on free and reduced lunch, and most of my students find our school to be the safest place in their lives. My students are caring, compassionate kids who look out for one another. In a neighborhood of drugs and gangs, I am constantly amazed that these students are not only able to get themselves to school everyday, but that they really want to be here. Students ask me everyday if they can stay after school. They ask to eat lunch in my room, and I think if I was here over the weekends, they would come in, too! My middle school students are at such an impressionable age in their lives, and creating a safe, comfortable learning environment is an essential component to a successful education for them.
My Project
I want to create comfortable reading environment for my students. A place that beckons them to sit down, relax and read. I have requested comfortable bean bags and soft rocking chairs that the students can use while reading. Currently our reading corner is filled with broken chairs and pillows with the stuffing falling out. A couple of years ago, I bought a rug, a bunch of chairs and pillows, but they have seen their wear. I can not now afford to replace all the furniture, and my students have grown to love the reading corner. I would love to continue to inspire reading with an update, fresh reading environment.
Creating a relaxing, fun learning environment that fosters reading inspires my students to sit down and read.
Many of my students have never really seen reading for pleasure in their lives. I have seen my students grow to love reading in my class, and each year we read over 8 books together. They become so proud of themselves by year's end and students always come back to see me and to share with me what books they have been reading.
