Our kindergarten class, located in a low income neighborhood in New York, is comprised of "special needs" children and general education students alike. After teaching in this neighborhood for several years, my Co-teacher and I have been brainstorming strategies to keep the kids on task so that the historical low achievement of our students stands a real chance to be improved.

Some of our students are especially "antsy" when sitting on the carpet, (and we spend a great deal of time on our rug!) This is the place where we meet several times a day from the morning hellos, to alphabet studies, shared writing, science and social studies lessons. We read stories together here, and we exercise, dance and act out stories here too.

We are hoping to receive a large and lovely carpet we saw in a catalog that had colorful rectangles in the weave, that allots sitting space for each child. We're sure this will cut down on crowding and inappropriate behavior, will establish the routine of assigned sitting places, and will help us have a more attentive and comfortable group.

Your donation will not only make our "meeting time" more organized and therefore more productive, it will also brighten the environment and lift our spirits.
