My students need a cozy carpet to sit on for story time.
A typical day in classroom is busy, busy, busy. The favorite part of our day is story time. I know this because I've asked my students! When I read a story to them and I see their faces, I know I've got them hooked the power of a good story.
The city that I teach in has been labeled the poorest city in the country for 2 years.
The whole school district qualifies for free breakfast and lunch. We have a 95% poverty rate. I have 28 students, and 12 of them are English language learners. Three students have Individualized Education Plans because they are part of the special education program. Three of my students are so bright I could probably let them teach! That being said, they are a great bunch of students. They are hardworking.
I tell them,"A lousy teacher wouldn't care if they worked hard or did well. I am NOT a lousy teacher. I am a good teacher and I care that you do well. So let's get moving and work hard together."
I've asked for one thing. We need a big cozy carpet. Even though it's one thing, it is expensive. I envision the whole class being able to sit on it during read aloud time and students lying down on it during independent reading time. I envision it being safe with no kid tripping over the ripping threads as is happening with our old carpet.
I work in a poor school district.
Some students read at home but most only read in school. I want the classroom's reading area to be warm and cozy. The students want to go to the carpet to read. I can imagine how thrilled they will be to go read on nice clean carpet. My district does not have the funds to replace my old frayed carpet. Without this donation, my students will have to sit on a chilly dirty floor.
DonorsChoose makes it easy for anyone to help a classroom in need. Public school teachers from every corner of America create classroom project requests, and you can give any amount to the project that inspires you.
