Teaching in an urban district means that the students that enter my classroom come in with a wide range of skills and experiences. The majority of our students are low income and ELL students. Some have never attended school and have had little to no home experience with literacy or basic skills like holding a pencil, using scissors, etc.
Many of our students start the school year speaking little, or no English but quickly learn to LOVE school.
It is very rewarding to watch these students grow throughout the year. Their brains are like little sponges and each year I am AMAZED by how much progress they make.
In an early childhood classroom, students spend a substantial portion of the school day sitting on a rug together. Throughout the day, students gather on the rug for calendar time, to listen to a read aloud, sing songs, dance and stretch, play games, turn and talk, receive directions or instruction and much, much more.
My students need this large rug so that they can all sit together comfortably and be able to focus on the activities at hand.
This new rug will allow my students to have their own personal space on the rug and lessen distraction from a nearby peer.
