Our school is a racially and culturally diverse school serving over 700 students in St. Paul, MN. Many of our students receive special services:
70% of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch.
Almost 30% of our students are English Language Learners.
About 10% of students receive Special Education Services.
We are comprised of 2 separate schools with different program. Students have many hands-on opportunities for learning through the Inquiry Zone, hydroponics lab, iPad initiative, and outdoor gardening areas. Our students are active, inquisitive children desperately in need of resources due to multiple years of school district budget cuts.
My Project
This is the library so we read...a LOT! When younger students come in to the library they head to the reading area and wander around the space, struggling to find the right place to sit. There is nothing to define the seating area, so students often end up sitting too close to the person next to them, inadvertently blocking another person's view, or pick a spot too far away from the reader. We have to take several valuable minutes from the already short library class time to figure out seating so everyone is comfortable.
We need a cozy place to read stories together, and for students to cuddle up with a book on their own.
It is such a simple thing but a rug would help students know where to go and find a seat more quickly so we could get to the fun stuff -- reading and learning.
