A day in Mrs. Hughes' classroom is always an adventure. It is a melting pot of learning styles from struggling learners to the highly gifted. We are a Title l school that is overwhelmed with meeting the academic and personal daily needs within our community. My students come from a rural area and low socioeconomic backgrounds, though they come to school ready and eager to learn.
I teach a large number of students who need access to enrichment opportunities beyond what our county is able to provide.
One of my goals is to increase their reading proficiency to help them succeed in school and in life. In turn, I hope to provide learning experiences that will develop a passion for learning beyond the classroom. In our room, we use a mixture of flexible grouping to promote academic success in reading skills and mathematical thinking.
My Project
In order to create a space large enough for a group of students, I have taped together two rugs. I am constantly adjusting the carpet, and the tape needs to be periodically replaced.
I am so excited about the opportunity for my students to have a carpet that will not only accommodate all of them but will also be interactive!
I’ve always thought that having a life-sized hundreds board would greatly enhance mathematical learning and be a more engaging way to build number sense. I will be able to find many engaging ways to remediate and accelerate based on student’s needs. My students love being able to spend time on our much smaller carpet reading or working in small groups. Having a larger carpet will allow us all to interact together to build a stronger classroom community.
