My students need an aesthetically pleasing reading area! My goal is to create an environment that draws in my readers and creates a warm, positive feeling around books and literacy.
The 4th grade students to whom I have the privilege of teaching reading and writing come from a wide variety of places and spaces. My school is located on the west side of a large city in Ohio. The demographics in this community have changed in recent years. As a teacher, I am striving to provide my students with an educational experience that will serve as a gateway to a promising future.
I teach two blocks of Language Arts to 58 knowledge hungry, creative young minds who do not have access to good quality literature at home.
I believe passionately in the premise that literacy skills improve when children are given the time and space to read independently and write.
Today, our elementary school faces the challenge of providing materials to a new student: those who face economic hardships and live with parents working to make ends meet. Several of my students are being raised by grandparents due to parental incarceration. In two sad cases, my students have lost their parents to drug overdoses.
My Project
When you fund this project, you are providing a carpet for the library in our 4th grade Language Arts classroom. My students face tumultuous life situations. Purchasing books, reading nightly, and using the public library have not always been a reality for their families. Their classroom is often the calm in the storm. As their teacher, I take the responsibility to create a warm, welcoming classroom space for them very seriously. Providing books and a reading space that is aesthetically pleasing is my priority.
This carpet is the perfect complement to our reading space; a nook that is charming and beckons the reader to sit down, grab a book, and relish the escape that great literature provides!
