Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach a class of multicultural and multilingual children in a large school in Bronx, New York. I create a family environment with my students whom I engage in teaching through various methods. I encourage my students to work cohesively and learn from one another.

My students get excited when they tackle something new, and I love to watch them learn how to work together to discover new methods to solve different problems.

Since many of my students are learning English for the first time and many are new to the country, they all particularly enjoy and benefit from hands-on experiences. Each year, I am awestruck by how much my students grow academically, and socially, in such a short amount of time.

My Project

My Kindergarten students are all experiencing in-person learning for the first time. Although many of them attended pre-k, their learning was remote due to the pandemic. As the children transitioned into school this year, many have had a hard time adjusting. The children in my school deal with quite a bit more than any child should and it causes them to often feel preoccupied, nervous, scared, overwhelmed, and/or overstimulated.

The children need a small comforting space where they may calm themselves when they are feeling overstimulated.

They would also benefit from being able to move around freely and have flexible seating that would be more conducive to how they feel more comfortable learning and doing work.

I want to be able to make my students feel as comfortable as they can in our classroom. Our classroom is their second home during the day and they are individuals who have different social, emotional, and physical needs to be met for them to be successful learners.
