"Miss J., may I please take home a book tonight?" is a question I heard several times at the end of the 2nd day of school. That question is the best thing a teacher could hear. However, it is very hard for students to find good fit books when the books are just sitting on a shelf, unorganized.
I teach in a 80% free and reduced lunch building.
The majority of my students have entered 3rd grade reading at a very low level, but they love reading! They are eager to go to the library and even more eager to thumb through the books in their new classroom's library! They are at a very critical transition in their education. Third grade is the year they stop LEARNING to READ, and start READING to LEARN ! One of their favorite times of the day is Daily 5. They love reading. What teacher doesn't want their students to love reading?
My Project
If a student wants a book about sports, he or she can go to book box 3, where they know sports books are. If a student wants to start a new series, he or she can go to the book stand, where they know the series books are located. When a student is done reading a book, they know to return it to book box 7, biographies, because the book has the same label as the book box. The book boxes and book stand will allow students to find the books they are looking for. The pillows will add to the coziness of our classroom and allow students to enjoy reading more by being comfortable. As a beginning teacher, I have spent well over $1,000 of my own money to build a classroom library. Every library could use more books and the books I've selected will be a great addition to our classroom!
I know that most of my children do not have access to books at home.
As a teacher, I want to provide my students with good fit books that they can read at school and at home. Research shows that the cover sells the book! Students are less likely to thumb through books when only the spine is shown. However, if a student can thumb through books seeing the cover, they are more likely to choose good fit books. Please help my students find books easily and help organize our classroom library!
