With all the changes students have faced in light of school closures and mandatory online learning, it is critical for my students to have access to expressive arts. In light of the recommendations for health and safety, that means they need individual art supplies and tools, as well as my guidance. At the start of the school year, I was able to send every student in my school (600 students) home with a small basic art kit (I know how lucky we are). My middle school students are returning with an A/B schedule, so I feel it is best for them to leave their already provided artist toolkits at home so they can follow along with our lessons virtually on their scheduled days home.
Art has been proven to enhance learning, social and emotional development in children of all ages, and is especially important in these uncertain times.
Having access to these materials whether learning at home or virtually with ensure continuity in my students' education.
My Project
I have purchased supplies for the year already. I even sent home basic art kits for all 600 of my K-8 art students. My 60 middle school students will be on an A/B schedule and some will be learning virtually while others are face to face. I'd like for them to keep their art kits at home so they can continue learning at home, but I need a few more things to ensure they do not have to share supplies while at school.
Arts Education supports the social and emotional well-being of students and is vital to a well-rounded education.
I am thrilled my school has been able to retain it's commitment to arts education despite the challenges of reopening in the COVID era. My task now is to make sure I can fulfill these needs safely.
