Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am an occupational therapist. I work with kids mostly K-8th. My caseload is comprised of students who come from often very impoverished migrant farm families. I work with special needs classrooms where fine motor skills and basic life skills are often lacking.
Many of these students have parents that want to help support more activities at home but do not have the know-how or items needed to support my goals for the students.
I am looking to create fine motor kits for kids to bring home to the families to help support their occupational therapy goals during this time of need with distance learning due to COVID-19.
My Project
I am working with a low income student population in California. I am leading a fundraising project to ensure that students have basic materials at home to work on their Occupational Therapy goals with their parents. Our district OTs will work on creating packets to explain various activities to do with these materials at home.
Some of the items will be used for handwriting, gross motor, and fine motor practice.
Many of these houses lack access to materials that help support their children's learning.
One example is using chalk to practice letter formation on the chalkboards we will provide. There are also many different art activities we will describe, with step-by-step instruction, that students and their families can work on to support progress toward their occupational therapy goals.
