My Students

My students are Kindergarten, first, and second-grade students with emotional and behavioral disabilities (EBD). My students are in a self-contained classroom and my goal is to teach them effective and positive strategies to help them learn and grow.

EBD students often find it difficult to control their behavior and emotions in order to focus on their work.

They commonly lack impulse control and the emotional balance that is necessary to handle social interactions with other students effectively.

EBD students’ behavior can be moderated by implementing a classroom management plan that is specially tailored to meet the specific needs of each student.

My Project

Phonics is a method of teaching students to read by correlating sounds with letters or groups of letters in the alphabet. This skill is very important for students who are learning to read like my Special Education K-2 students. These students need engaging phonics instruction. Due to the current distance learning across the United States, phonics has been very difficult to teach virtually. It will be important for me to focus on phonics in my teaching once we return to school to make up for the reading loss that has occurred due to isolation and parental support of my low-income families.

It will be important for me to have phonics instruction ready to go that I can incorporate seamlessly with the instruction I need to recover when we can all be back together and for the remaining time we have this school year.

I think having Bluetooth headphones for this listening center will help my active EBD students so they can wiggle and move freely while still listening and participating in their phonics work.
