Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a new teacher in an urban area that has a high population of low-income families. Although some families may not be able to financially provide certain experiences for their children, I truly saw the parental dedication at “back to school night.” I want to provide my students with an amazing experience and exposure in the art room they may otherwise never have. My students are inquisitive, full of excitement, and dedication. This leads to engagement and growth in our 90-minute block schedule.
My Project
My students are now distance learning, and while I am coming up with many creative options to continue their art experience, and higher order thinking with little to no art supplies, I still want my students to be able to access real art materials. I feel if we are able to create an art supply package for students at home in isolation it could truly change their current world. I can only imagine what it’s like for my students who were thriving in the classroom with their art, who now are learning all online. I want to afford students the option to put their computer or smart phone down, get off google classroom and create. I feel creating tangible artwork will be a cathartic experience for these students who are now in isolation. I want my students to know we as a society have not forgotten about them, it is more important now than ever to show our students how much we care about them, and their education.
