Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school, of over 850 students, is a Title I school with 49% English language learners. Nearly 40% of our students in our district are listed as homeless or housing insecure and 78% in our school are labeled as low income. Many of my students have had limited experiences outside of their homes - they've not been to the ocean and we live only 10 miles away.
Technology and the Internet help to even the playing field for those who have not yet had the chance to experience the great big world waiting for them.
The use of technology - cameras to record changes in our world, apps to practice skills and learn new ones, and digital citizenship while sharing with peers and parents - are all relevant to Kindergarten success. In Kindergarten, we want to build the skill set for being comfortable, knowledgeable and enabled to function in a tech-centric society.
My Project
Have you ever tried to listen to something when there are 14 other devices trying to say something too? I have. So have my Kinders. When they are at the computer station, they all use their devices without headphones. I would like to have each device have a headphone.
It is difficult to follow along with the story, or directions or activity when you can hear all of the other devices too.
Then when they need to record, they must step outside to have any success in capturing their voice. A set of headphones could help squash the cacophony of the computer station.
