Our school is a special place. We have special students and a special staff who respects and admires one another. Sadly, one of our most amazing teachers passed away last year after a brave fight with cancer. We miss her terribly but are committed to continuing to teach with her dedication to students, her "whatever-it-takes" attitude, and her graciousness. Our school is Title I, and most students are learning English as a second language. They love being safe and happy at school, and we are committed to creating a setting that offers just that.
Gail Hooker was an educator who changed lives.
She had infinite amounts of love and patience, as well as the amazing ability to convince her students - most with special needs - that they could reach their potential. The relationships she made with her students, their families, and the staff were of utmost importance to her, and it showed.
We want to memorialize Gail in the most appropriate way we can think of - by creating an outdoor space where students can read, discuss, and learn...and be reminded of her and her love for all of us.
Mrs. Hooker was an avid reader and delighted in students' love of reading. She loved being outside and would take her students out whenever she could. Our school courtyard has been underutilized lately, so we are redesigning it in honor of Gail.
We plan to make the courtyard a beautiful new learning space - where students can read, write, or have "lunch bunch" with a teacher.
Teachers can hold class there, or use it as a reward or incentive. We have plans for paint, a garden, and seating, but shade is something that is necessary as well. The pergola will be both attractive and functional.
