My students need these textbooks. We study them as part of our Courage Curriculum. They use these books for reading improvement, analysis, and for their writing as well as anchor texts.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are adventurous, curious, diverse, smart, and willing to try new things. They thrive on project-based learning, which helps them to make meaning of their fiction and nonfiction reading.
They are diverse, from many cultural backgrounds.
They are Hispanic, and also African American, White, and from other cultural backgrounds. This is a big "plus" in our classroom as we discuss fiction and nonfiction writing from multiple perspectives.
My students are top-notch debaters. They learn on Day One in my classroom to make a claim, back it up with evidence, and "glue" that evidence to the claim with reasoning.
My Project
All of our students are curious and courageous, and want to read about other children like them who are also courageous. Currently, we do not have enough textbooks in our classroom for each child to be able to read independently. With these textbooks, students will be able to read in the classroom, read at home, and be able to "go deep" with the themes, plot analysis, and character analysis that is required of them, as they prepare to write in response to what they have read.
Facing the Lion is a key text in our Courage Curriculum.
It is a true story of a boy who group up in Africa with the Maasai people. He faced many challenges, and eventually came to the United States. He is currently a teacher in the U.S. His story is written as a memoir, in first person, and is highly engaging to middle school readers.
