Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I feel so fortunate to have the privilege of being a Dual Language Immersion teacher at an incredible elementary school in California. Our school offers a unique two-way immersion program with the goal of fostering children’s development of fluency in communication and literacy in two languages, English and Spanish. I am thrilled to be part of this two-way immersion program and believe strongly in its goals. My students are amazing! They are learning to read, write, speak, and listen in both Spanish and English, as well as reaching for mastery of all academic content standards, including math and science.
We value our students and their families and stress the importance of building community and appreciating differences in culture.
My class is comprised of English Language Learners and students learning to speak Spanish for the first time. My students enjoy working together and helping each other become more proficient in their new language. I love seeing my students turn to each other and ask “Como se dice…” or “How do you say...” because that shows me they are building relationships and learning together!
My Project
I am requesting materials that will support and enhance the math portion of my classroom. My students are building their knowledge of early math concepts such as counting, addition, subtraction and number recognition. A strong foundation in these skills will ensure they are ready to learn about financial literacy later on. The number sequencing puzzles I am requesting will help students build their number recognition skills, while the snap cubes will help students with counting, subtraction, and addition. They can use the snap cubes to build number sense by counting with one-to-one correspondence and then learn simple addition and subtraction. The set of mini bowling games I am also requesting will help make our subtraction unit more fun and hands-on.
My students will be practicing important math skills they need to master in order to expand their knowledge of financial literacy in a hands-on and engaging way.
I want all my students to gain a love for math while in my classroom. My students could use all of these materials to practice important math skills in a hands-on and engaging way. Help me instill in my students a love for math through this project!
