Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I feel so fortunate to have the privilege of being a Dual Language Immersion teacher at an incredible elementary school in California. Our school offers a unique two-way immersion program with the goal of fostering children’s development of fluency in communication and literacy in two languages, English and Spanish. I am thrilled to be part of this two-way immersion program and believe strongly in its goals. My students are amazing! They are learning to read, write, speak and listen in both Spanish and English as well as reaching for mastery of all academic content standards, including math and science.
We value our students and their families and stress the importance of building community and appreciating differences in culture.
My class is comprised of English Language Learners and students learning to speak Spanish for the first time. My students enjoy working together and helping each other become more proficient in their new language. I love seeing my students turn to each other and ask “Como se dice…” or “How do you say...” because that shows me they are building relationships and learning together!
My Project
I am requesting materials that will support and enhance the math portion of my classroom. My students are eager to learn from the moment they first walk into our classroom and love math time. The ten frames and double-sided counters that I am requesting will help make learning how to count more hands-on and visual for all my students. They can use the ten frames and counters to build number sense, learn to count with one-to-one correspondence to twenty, and learn simple addition and subtraction. The blank dice and spinners I am requesting will help me differentiate our math centers and lessons to best fit the needs of all my students. I will be able to make dice specifically for students who are still working on numbers 1-5 while challenging other students who are ready for numbers 11-20. These materials will help my students develop a strong understanding of numbers, which is important before introducing money and financial literacy with The Coin Counting Book.
I want all my students to gain a love for math!
My students could use all of these materials to learn in a hands-on and engaging way. Help me instill in my students a love for math through this project!
