Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is a welcoming environment with a strong belief in building on the talents and experiences of our diverse student population. 76.5% of our students come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, 25% are English learners, and more than 96% are students of color.
My class is made up of 32 enthusiastic students who are ready to learn and grow together.
We work hard to build a strong and supportive classroom community in which everyone can and will succeed. We learn and grow together through the sharing of our individual backgrounds and stories. Each perspective is respected and valued.
My Project
Counting collections is a well-researched method of supporting students to develop a solid understanding of number sense.
Counting large groups of objects helps students to understand the concept of large quantities as well as develop efficient strategies for counting (such as using number patterns, skip counting, arrays, multiplying, using partial products, etc.)
These groups of small objects will help my students to develop a concrete understanding of the third grade math concepts as they count them. This structure of learning supports students at their individual learning levels, so the students will be able to grow in the use of the strategies they need at their own level.
The graph paper will help students to organize, record, and share their thinking, thus building their social communication skills while deepening their mathematical understanding.
