Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My class is composed of 26 amazing kindergarteners who are all very creative, flexible, resilient, compassionate and caring. My students come from diverse backgrounds but all come to school together to learn and dance with a smile on their faces.
Our school just opened in South Central two years ago so we do not have many resources yet, but we hope to have plenty in the future!
I would love for my students to walk in their classroom full of engaging supplies that will make them excited about learning.
My Project
This year I’ve begun incorporating counting collections in our math curriculum and my students are enjoying it a great deal.
There’s only one problem, my students need a variety of materials to count and our supplies are quite limited.
A variety of manipulatives are needed to keep students engaged and working towards building their number sense.
They will start with what they know, such as counting from 1-10 and then eventually build on to counting on to 100 or more! We want to have small, medium, and big collections. With practice, these skills will transfer to solving word problems.
My students will be able to use kid-pleasing objects to count, measure, compare and sort! The magnetic jumbo ten frames will also allow us to model counting/adding/subtracting and allow my students to manipulate the magnets individually or with a partner.
I recently learned about CGI (Cognitively Guided Instruction) and I am excited to implement it in my classroom this upcoming school year. I want us to start with counting collections as counting is the basis for problem-solving.
CGI will engage my students in counting collections by using different strategies and learning from each other.
